Operating nurse Natalia Kopashynska was caught on night duty by a full-scale war on February 24, 2022, in a hospital in the Borodianka settlement, Kyiv region. Among the first victims was a woman with an 11-month old daughter. The car in which the civilians were traveling was shot by russian invaders. The mother was shot in the hand, the child – with shrapnel wounds to the legs. The driver and another passenger from that car were killed on the spot. This woman was able to pull her child and the boy – the son of the killed woman – out of the car.
After that, Natalia had to quickly leave the hospital, cause tanks entered the settlement. Together with a colleague, they went home to the village of Klavdiievo-Tarasove next to Borodianka. Natalia collected the available tools, agreed with the surgeon, attracted a volunteer driver and continued to save people.
One day, two wounded sisters were brought to the kindergarten, where local residents were hiding from shelling. Unfortunately, one of them did not survive. Natalia personally prepared the other one for evacuation – she connected her to an IV, collected warm clothes, and taught her father how to take care of her on the road. The family was able to leave. Today, this family lives abroad.
Natalia also had to attend births – three times. One day, a girl named Eve and a boy named Adam were born. Their names became a symbol of hope for all those who then survived the occupation.
