There is a special bus stop in the village of Horodske in the Zhytomyr region – it is painted with Ukrainian themes by artist Oksana Helevei. Her daughter Sofiia tells us how her mother memorised every detail of her grandmother’s house to embody her memories in the colours on the walls of the bus stop. For the girl, it was like a fairy tale to watch the beauty of her native land come to life under her mother’s brush.

Now Oksana Helevei is abroad with her six younger children – the parents decided to leave so that the kids would not see the horrors of war. There, the artist represents Ukraine at a local school, talking about traditions, but her heart is torn to return home. And the bus stop remains as a reminder of what used to be, and as a reminder that home is always waiting for you to return.
